06:40. Out before coffee. The pile has dropped
maybe a hand's width since last week. It settles
when it cools. I know that. I came out just to
look at it and I brought the probe anyway.

Core reads 41°C. Last Tuesday it was 58. The
thermophiles are finishing. It is going cold from
the inside and the numbers say so plainly…

Top of an orange peel still orange, the underside
already gone to thread and white. Mid-sentence.
I can name the mould doing it. I'm not going to.

C:N is past its prime now, call it 17 to 1. The hot
work is done here. Nothing left to measure that
isn't just the day cooling toward the average.

That's the reading. The exotherm is over. I'm
closing the notebook and going in for the coffee.
